Oh those future cooking goals...
Once upon a time, I used to like to cook. This was back when we lived in Miami. I would cook once a week or so to help out my mom. Funny, now that I think about it when I lived on my own with my now ex in Tallahassee I hated to cook. I ate out a lot then...
Anyways, at some point in life, I liked to cook. With 2018 coming up fast, I'm making it a resolution to take up cooking again.
The cooking this past year has mostly been left up to my dad, which is just fine, he's a great cook, but I think the family is up for a bit of a change. Since I work wonky retail hours, I'm not going to be able to cook every single day, so right now my focus is to just cook a large meal once a week. As I start to get back into the habit, then I'll expand how many times I cook. It's not only for me to get back into the habit, but mostly to help out at home. The status of our living situation is in a state of constant flux (well actually it's in a holding pattern right now, but we expect it to be in flux), and with me working so close to the house with wonky hours, this is one of the ways I can help out at home. And the closeness means that it takes me less time to get home than everyone else, AND I actually work across the street from the supermarket, so I can pick up extra ingredients as I need them in a pinch.
So I have been spending the last few days collection recipes and ideas to start trying out in the new year. Mom keeps recommending that I hit up Pinterest, which I do, but I find it unreliable to keep track of recipes I was to try. So I'm doing it the old-fashioned way, bookmarking pages I like and praying that they still exist when I get around to cooking them.
In all of this, I have to keep in mind a few things: time, cost, and taste profiles. My brother and I are kinda picky eaters, and while I can make substitutions that I can be fine with, sometimes he won't be fine with them (I'm looking at you bell peppers), which sucks because it limits a lot of what I can cook and how experimental I can be. Life would be easier if we both like broccoli.
But all in all, this task will be something fun to look forward to this coming year. Like I said, I used to like to cook. And who knows, maybe I'll get back into baking as well.
When I do start this venture, I'll try to remember to post pictures as well as what recipes I use. Wish me luck!
